From the recording Clinical Observations
"Clinical Observations" is an extended series of improvisational episodes for piano solo linked together by haunting refrain that recalls emotions belonging to some half-remembered, half-forgotten relationship that time has framed in a bittersweet melancholy. Throwing formal construction to the winds, the music is allowed to unfold seemingly by itself in a progressive sequence of its own volition. The title implies successive analytical observations that are made based on an harmonic hypothesis stated at the outset. The data, expressed as periodic musical scenes or chain phrases, accumulates as anecdotal evidence culminating in a conclusion made inevitable by emergent thematic and harmonic issues that manifest as the music proceeds. The composer regards this piece as his best to date.
