Concerto for Two Violins in D minor – 2015      The double concerto was composed originally as a vehicle for The Symphomaniax, a classical music ensemble that features solo violin, ‘cello, guitar and bass. Modeled on the structure of a Baroque-style concerto, the piece is cast in the traditional three-movement fast-slow-fast alternation that juxtaposes the two soloists in an unfolding imitative melodic contrapuntal tapestry. The first movement, Allegro assai, is subtitled Sopra Tony Vee, in deference to Antonio Vivaldi whose instrumental concerti serve as the historical backdrop for this piece. The alternation of orchestral tutti and lightly scored solisections are the essential characteristic of that venerable composer’s style that are clearly in evidence throughout this opening movement. The second movement, an Intermezzo, is set in a contrastingly slower tempo marked Tranquillo, and constitutes an exhaustive excursion through the harmonic realms of the relative major key of F major. The final cadence in the submediant tonality of B-flat represents an harmonic extension beyond the normal limits of compositional practice. TheFinale rounds out the tripartite form through an elegantly proportioned Italian style dialogue between the solo instruments that is joined by the orchestra, bringing the concerto to a satisfying conclusion. This concerto was first performed in its original version for solo violin and guitar by Ruth Bruegger, violinist.with the composer playing the guitar part, in an outdoor concert in the Founders Hall Amphitheater in Calabasasin July of 2014. The two-violin version was made the following year and received its inaugural performance in a concert featuring Ruth Bruegger and Abigail Tsai playing the solo violin parts at the Elks Lodge Auditorium in Canoga Park, in August of 2016.
