From the recording III. Theme and Variations
The third movement, Theme and Variations, is a playful series of recollections that invoke atmospheres and impressions of other famous pieces. It is left to the listener to discover these, which may include but is not limited to music by Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Copland. The tune that is the subject of the variations is entitled Sometimes and can be heard in its original form on the Molay Band album Waiting For the Bus. This song was also featured in the musical version of the play Tomahawk that premiered in 2008.
The Flute Concerto received its inaugural performance in concert on November 23, 2013 at the Scherr Forum Theater in the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza featuring Katherine Marsh, flutist with the composer conducting the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra.
